“I used to think that if I cared about anything, I would have to care about everything and I would go stark raving mad.”
–Prince Henry, in the movie Ever After

My name is Carol. I used to use the fact that I couldn’t be perfect as an excuse to not be a little bit better. I would think of a way I would like to change or improve, and then immediately think of about a million other ways. I got overwhelmed by (and sometimes ashamed of) how far I had to go.

This I believe:  We are all doing the best we can with what we’ve got. Rather than judge ourselves and everyone else by what we’ve created to date, let’s just accept where we are. We don’t have the option to change what already happened, or didn’t happen, so let’s just let it be. It is what it is. It is our now.

And now is the only place we have to start from.

“Start from now” doesn’t always mean “start now.” Sometimes it means “accept now as your starting place.” Sometimes it means “appreciate now as your launching pad.” Sometimes it means “take a tiny step toward what you want.” Sometimes, it means “take two steps ‘back’ from what you thought you wanted.”

Starting from now, let’s decide what we want to be. Let’s choose our lives according to our vision for ourselves and the world. Let’s celebrate our huge accomplishments, along with our crashing failures, along with our halting, tentative baby steps. Let’s acknowledge that there is greatness in us, and let’s give our greatness a little room to breathe.

Sincerely,
Carol

I feel as though I’ve just been given permission to accept that the “here and now” doesn’t have to be a bad thing, even though I want to improve it. Being a good Catholic girl, I tend to wallow in the guilt of just about anything. This inspirational note tells me that it’s ok that I’ve not yet achieved all that I intend to achieve (in life or even just a specific instance), at least I’m taking steps towards it. Sometimes half the battle is just getting started!

Thanks for the inpiration!
Melanie

Thank you, Mel!! I’m so pleased that is what you got from this. You always have permission (and it didn’t come from me!)
